Thames Bone China
Contempoary lighting formed of the past
Investigating London through the lens of Bone China and exploring how the city’s historical waste can bring power the medium of ceramic design. The River Thames is central to London, both geographically and spiritually, a constant feature of the city since its inception. Bones rest on the foreshores of the river, washed up over time, from centuries of waste deposited by butchers on London Bridge and whaling merchants.
This historic found material inspired the creation of a true Thames Bone China as the base of a ceramic research collection telling the untold of London’s past and present. This body of work is set around sustainability and material ethics using key concepts: Circular economy a system where materials never become waste and industrial symbiosis where by products or waste flows from one industry become the raw materials or inputs from another
