Contemporary History
Investigating the relationship between London’s ecological past and present
“History does not repeat itself but often it rhymes”
This body of work formed from White Bone China and Thames Bone China (TBC) a clay body I created from the discarded bones found on the foreshores left by centuries old butchers and whaling merchants. Historically the Thames was a centre of the whaling trade where whales were hunted for their oil (blubber) to be burnt creating light, whereas today the Thames tells a different ecological story. The unique colour of the clay body is a result of the bones absorbing the heavy metal pollutants from sewage dumps and industrial and urban runoff.
This installation designed to highlight how one material can carry both ecological narratives of the past and present.
